9th WORLD FISHERIES CONGRESS

Fish and Fisheries at the Food-Water-Energy Nexus

Organized through the World Council of Fisheries Societies, every four years delegates from around the world meet to exchange ideas and perspectives about new research, emerging issues, scientific breakthroughs, and governance related to fisheries science, industry, conservation, and management.

Join us in 2024 as we explore the congress theme of Fish and Fisheries at the Food-Water-Energy Nexus. We are preparing a program composed of an opening plenary, general sessions, education workshops, and planned symposia related to sustainability, fish and aquatic ecosystems, fisheries and society, and innovations in fisheries.

As host city, Seattle is an ideal location for an international fish and fisheries conference, with an international airport, a light rail system, and public transportation. Home to several academic, governmental and industry leaders in fish and fisheries sciences, Seattle has a vibrant downtown surrounded by verdant forests, snowcapped mountains, lakes and rivers, Puget Sound, and several National Parks.

GEO BON Global Conference

Monitoring Biodiversity for Action

The Global Conference on Biodiversity and Monitoring is organized by GEO BON and its partners between 10-13 October 2023 in Montreal, Canada.

One year after COP15 of the UN CBD and the landmark agreement of a Global Biodiversity Framework, the GEO BON global conference will focus on the grand challenge of ‘Monitoring Biodiversity for Action’. A central theme will be the development of best practices and new technologies for biodiversity observations and monitoring to support transformative policy and conservation action.

The conference will offer a venue for sharing and exchanging scientific and traditional knowledge related to biodiversity change, from genes to ecosystems; the associated contributions to people, across all sectors of society; and its conservation, sustainable use and shared benefits.

We invite researchers, policy-makers, Indigenous peoples and local communities, conservation organizations, businesses and others in the financial sector to join us in Montreal.

esa: for all ecologists

2023 Annual Meeting in Portland, Oregon

The field of ecology has much to offer in addressing pressing ecological problems at all scales. Ecologists working in the private sector (e.g., as consultants, for industry, or in NGOs) and public sector (for resource management agencies or regulatory bodies) are the professionals most responsible for transferring ecological science to effectively manage, conserve, and restore species and ecosystems. The ESA annual meeting provides a tremendous opportunity to engage private- and public-sector ecologists with academic ecologists who generate the science; however, this opportunity has historically largely been missed due to a lack of programming that would attract non-academics. This year’s theme seeks to help create an ESA for All Ecologists by providing programming and inviting sessions that better engage private- and public-sector ecologists by highlighting projects that are implementing ecological science, collaborating across sectors, educating future scientists and decision makers, and disseminating basic and applied ecology research to those who need it most.

Resilience and Recovery in Aquatic Systems

Concepts of resilience and recovery do not only apply to aquatic ecosystems but also to societies when faced with disruptions and crises. Past events have shown that adaptability and decisiveness are important keys to resilience and recovery. Disruptions are opportune moments for setting up strategies for management and recovery. Faced with the COVID-19 pandemic, ASLO meetings have adapted by transforming the ASM 2021 Palma meeting to virtual with a positive attitude that in 2023 we will recover and meet in-person. Positivity is also an important factor. We do not dwell on problems, but we try to look for solutions and get united for whatever crisis we face.

We will incorporate the theme of resilience and recovery in aquatic systems into the plenary sessions and encourage submissions that examine these topics and invite you to contribute special sessions on topics relevant to freshwater and marine ecosystems.
